Inspired by fertile lands, community, palm trees, the magic and energy of the Tigris and Euphrates, sweet dates, masgoof (fish cooked with soul), belonging and honouring lineage. For Boney M fans.
Namaqua's artivist t-shirts are limited in edition. Each slogan is a movement for change. The studio's first release, the Nama T-shirt, is made from 100% GOT certified organic Pima cotton, grown without chemical fertilisers, pesticides or GMOs. The cotton is a bespoke yarn to Namaqua's specifications, and the fabric finished without chemicals or silicones.
The most often quoted definition comes from the UN World Commission on Environment and Development; Sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences.
In simplest terms, sustainability is about future generations and the world we will leave them.
The Nama T-shirt is created sustainably and for longevity. The studio uses the traditional hand silkscreening process to print the slogans, preferring to use water-based inks rather than plastisol. The water used throughout the silkscreening process for Namaqua is recycled and reused. The studio ensures the seamstresses that cut, stitch and finish the Nama T-shirts are remunerated well with good working conditions that include in house medical care. Namaqua's sustainability efforts took the studio on a search to find biodegradable fasteners; there are many created from recycled plastic, but very few are biodegradable. The fastener found and used to secure the hang tags for the Nama T-shirts are biodegradable within 24 days.
